How to embroider Nutcrackers for Christmas

With the release of Disney’s film, “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms”, there have been a surge of interest in these little figures. At present there are now 6 nutcrackers in the collection at Graceful Embroidery. These little men have been created for the 5″ x 7″ hoop.

A while back I discovered that felt is an absolute pleasure and joy to work with. My first three nutcrackers were tested out on silk, shown here, which is my favourite fabric but I tested out the most recent ones on white felt fabric.

Here they are and you can see how great they sit on the felt. The beauty of felt is that you could cut around them and use them a large tags for presents. It does not fray neither does it pucker!!! Oh joy, so it is the perfect medium for new machine embroiders.

I have digitised a Father Christmas, a gypsy rogue playing a drum and a king for the second set. With a total of six nutcrackers you could place them on a tree skirt or put them on felt bags for presents. I am sure there are projects just waiting for embroidered nutcrackers.

Do change the colours around and create your own unique nutcrackers, to suit your Christmas decor and share in the comments below, how you would use them. Everybody is always interested in other embroiderer’s suggestions.

There are more nutcrackers on the way during 2019, and I have been asked for a Sugar plum fairy, a mouse king and Uncle Drosselmeyer to go with the first two trios. Now there is a challenge which I will have to consider carefully.

I think that this Gypsy nutcracker is my favourite so far, with his lovely hat decorated with a feather! Which one is your favourite? Now I had not thought of decorating my nutcrackers with pearls or crystals but that is an option.

The Nutcracker story comes from Russia and is well known as the beautiful ballet by Peter Tchaikovsky. I shall sit down and watch the new film,
The Nutcracker and the Four Realms and see what develops from there. In the meantime if you need the second trio of nutcrackers they are available until tomorrow for $18 but after that they will be the full price of $25.

Love the new nutcrackers, and the idea of working with felt. The nutcracker tree skirt will be my next project. Will larger sizes be available? Just started playing with felt for fairy houses for my grand children with battery tea lights inside to light them up and then discovered bugs in felt and then butterflies done on felt, all done with machine embroidery and many totally in the hoop. Discovered felt supplies on etsy never thought there could be so many colors available. Plus metalic thread as just a few highlights adds so much to the houses and bugs. Now will consider crystals and pearls. Did your first set of 3 on a tea towel and they stitched out beautifully. Thank you for bringing back nutcrackers, I collected them when I lived in Germany and always loved their old world charm.
